Round About Roane

Volunteer Assisted Senior-Friendly Transportation in Roane County

Round About Roane is designed as a senior-friendly, door through door transportation program for Roane County residents 60 years of age or older who need rides for essential trips including medical, grocery shopping, and social service appointments.

A transportation manager who is housed at the Senior Services Department will coordinate the rides and schedules.

Hours of operation will be Monday through Friday, 9:00 A.M. – 3:00 P.M., and based on volunteer driver availability. The riders of Round About Roane are 60+ years old, do not drive, live independently in their own homes or apartments, are mobile, are able to communicate and understand, can walk unassisted or with the use of a cane/walker, and can afford a minimal cost for transportation.

Annual rider membership is $25.00 and a roundtrip ride costs $6.00. All rides will be paid in advance to Round About Roane. Volunteers will not handle money.

Volunteers Are The Success Of The Program!

Key to Round About Roane are the volunteers who drive their own personal vehicles to transport seniors to essential destinations. The number of volunteers will greatly influence the number of seniors that can be served.

Volunteers will be asked to commit to 2 trips per month to drive a senior on an essential trip within Roane County. More time is encouraged and will not be turned down, but the minimum commitment is 2 trips. Consider volunteering in between vacations. Drive during the summer months if you are a teacher. Mileage reimbursement may be available if requested.

Many volunteers inquire about insurance and liability issues. Please contact your automobile insurance agent to discuss liability issues. Primary coverage is through the volunteer’s auto insurance. In addition, Round About Roane may be able to purchase excess auto, medical, and liability insurance for all volunteers. Finally, state and federal Volunteer Protection laws offer another layer of safety for volunteer drivers.

Driver must be over the age of 21, have a valid TN driver’s license, and proof of insurance. Volunteer drivers must complete training and required background checks.
